Pop up consignment shop helps teens find prom dress, boosts self-esteem

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)- Prom and wedding seasons are just around the corner.

For teens headed to the big dance, they often times spend hundreds of dollars just on the dress alone. Wedding dresses cost even more. There's a spot in Knoxville, however, that's helping shoppers save on that special dress and even make money along the way.

Joy Sabo started Southern Belle's Closetin 2012 with a friend. It's a formal dress consignment pop up shop. She was recently divorced and wanted to sell her wedding dress. Sabo recognized that many women were looking to do the same thing.
Over the years, the event has grown.

"I learn new stuff every single year. It's constant. You're always learning and always growing," said Sabo.

The shop has thousands of dresses ranging from five to 1,000 dollars. The sellers set a price. Sabo says to take your time when you come to shop.

"It's very overwhelming. There's about 2,500 dresses in here and about 80 percent of them are brand new. Think outside the box. Try colors you wouldn't normally try," she said. The shop is located next to Earth Fare in Bearden. There are several dressing rooms to try the dresses on before they're bought.

There's also a large selection of wedding dresses for brides wanting to save on their big day. "That's the most rewarding, is helping these girls who can't afford to go to a boutique. We have brand new ones in the back from 50 bucks," said Sabo.

The dresses range in all sizes, including plus size. Sabo is helping people save money, but she's also hoping to spread an important message.

"Be yourself and be a unicorn. Stand out. Come in and find your unicorn dress," she said.

The pop-up shop is open on the weekends in February starting on Friday afternoons. You can still sell dresses until Wednesday, February 13. The shop also has a seamstress on site that can help with alterations.
