KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Most of us use it at home for baking and cleaning, but you might not be taking advantage of everything baking soda can do. A small spoonful can change your skin, teeth, and home.

"Baking soda is literally a superstar," said Dr. Pete Sulack, America's Leading Stress Expert. "Hundreds and hundreds of things that you can use it for."

You can get a box of it for under $1.00 at Whole Foods.

Dr. Pete added it will keep your body feeling healthy.

Everyday stress, sugar, and processed foods make the body more acidic.

"An acidic environment in the body can cause your spleen, your heart, your liver, and your kidneys to overwork," said Dr. Pete. "The body will begin to grab the electrolytes from bones and tissues causing osteoporosis, degeneration and so forth."

Baking soda can help balance the acid in your body.

All it takes is half a teaspoon in a cup of water. Doctors said just keep it to seven or less a day.

"Baking soda, which is sodium bicarbonate, because of it's pH of 8.4, helps alkalize the body and create a great environment for the body to thrive," said Dr. Pete.

There is even more beauty in baking soda and you can try it at home.

"You can actually put half a cup of baking soda in your bath and it's great to reduce the effects of sunburn," said Dr. Pete.

He said it's also good for your teeth. All you have to do is wet your brush, sprinkle a little bit of baking soda, and brush your teeth. You'll get a natural paste and teeth whitener.

"Rub it on your teeth, rub it on your gums," said Dr. Pete. "It really helps kill off that bacteria."

You might know it is also good to reduce the odor in your fridge. The same goes for natural deodorant. Just mix a little bit with water and rub under your armpits. You can even add essential oils for a nice smell.

Dr. Pete said you should make sure you consume baking soda in-between meals, so you'll still get the acidity you need to digest your food.
