Shop with the Doc: Emu Oil

SWEETWATER, Tenn. (WVLT) -- In this week's Shop with the Doc, Dani Ruberti found a skin product that will leave your skin feeling refreshed and some have found it can also help with pain.

In the heart of East Tennessee nestled in the back roads of Sweetwater sat a special kind of farm.

"It's an an emu farm, where they raise emus, which is small version of an ostrich," said Dr. Pete Sulack, America's Leading Stress Expert.

This farm raised more than a hundred feathery, long legged emus, but there's something really special about them. They are raised for their oil.

"I've been using it for years and it's amazing for pain relief, for inflammation, and for removing the effects of arthritis," said Dr. Pete.

The oil comes from the fat of an emu. You can find it in a bottle and all you have to do is rub it on your skin. Dr. Pete said many use this for pain and irritations, but that's not all.

According to Dr. Pete, it's an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory in the body. He added it can be a powerful moisturizer because it goes deeper than just the top layer of your skin.

"Once we get that emu oil in the skin with all those great anti-inflammatory properties, that's when we're going to reduce the effects of aging & reduce the effects of inflammatory skin diseases," said Dr. Pete.

Some studies show it can promote healthy hair and nails, help wrinkles, burns & even stretch marks, but Dr. Pete says it can also play a big role in some skin conditions.

"Psoriasis, eczema, rosacea and these inflammatory skin conditions," listed Dr. Pete. "Emu oil has been proven to be effective because it reduces inflammation and it gets through the skin so easily."
