It started out sunny for many on Monday, but it didn't end that way for folks in Newport, Tennessee.

Damage from thunderstorms was reported by many residents at around 4:30 p.m. Power outages were reported in Newport and the surrounding areas of Jefferson and Hamblen counties.

Ashley Morton, an employee at the eastern Food City in Newport said, "All the sudden we had some lightning, some thunder, and everything, and all of a sudden the computer room just went black."

"We were like 'what's going on'," she told WVLT News. "It was just really a traumatic experience."

One woman said she saw multiple trees down in the city as well as power lines. WVLT's weather team said the rain and storms were expected to calm down by Monday night.
