Surgeon General to release landmark report on alcohol, drugs and health
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy will release a report on substance misuse and related disorders Thursday. The report, titled "Facing Addition in America: The Surgeon General's Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health" is the first-ever Surgeon General report of its kind.
Murthy has made the addiction crisis one of the main priorities of his term, calling it one of America's most pressing public health problems, as nearly 21 million Americans suffer from a substance use disorder.
The report addresses alcohol, illicit drugs and prescription drug misuse. It also provides and in-depth analysis of disorders like addiction, including a call to action to prevent and treat these conditions while promoting recovery.
