Suspect shot in testicle, later arrested after robbery attempt

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville Police said a man was shot in the testicle after attempting to steal a woman's money and drugs.

Devin DeWayne Smith, 21, faces two charges of aggravated assault.

According to police, on August 24, a woman left her home to engage in a drug deal when several people ambushed her during a robbery attempt. The suspects demanded her money and and drugs.

Police reported that a neighbor heard the commotion, grabbed his gun, and ran outside and attempted to stop the assault.

One of the suspects fired his gun at the neighbor and struck him in the chest. According to the report, the neighbor returned fire and struck one of the suspects in the testicle. The suspects fled the scene and the victim was transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

While waiting to have the injuries treated, the victim identified Smith as someone dropped him off at the University of Tennessee Medical Center to be treated for his gunshot wound.

Devin DeWayne Smith is being held at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility with a $100,000 bond.
