Tennessee School of Beauty offers $1 haircuts for suicide prevention

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Tennessee School of Beauty is cutting hair for a cause.

The hair stylists will cut your hair for free, all you have to do is donate at least a dollar to the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network.

"We need to do something to, help prevent this," TSB President Adam Brown said.

TSB student Abigail Jenkins said there's a personal connection with a client in the hair business that you don't often see.

"A lot of people will tell their hairstylists things, they wont even tell their best friends," Jenkins said. "When you have someone in your chair and they continuously come back, there's so much relationship that goes on. Over time, you get to know them on a personal level."

Jenkins was cutting a woman's hair on Wednesday whose brother committed suicide. The woman told Jenkins he got in a fight with his girlfriend, and he was just 18 when it happened.

"It's really important that some body is taking a stand, is raising awareness and is giving us the opportunity to get our hands in hair," Jenkins said. "To do something about it, instead of just knowing it is out there."

The special is going on through June 22, when students go on break.

"I hope this saves at least one life," Brown said. "I hope there is somebody out there that is maybe thinking about this and realizes there's other resources that they don't have to take their own life."
