Tennessee Valley Fair began as more than food and rides

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- The Tennessee Valley Fair has brought fun to East Tennessee for nearly a century. The fair actually started as a way to bring awareness to the state's agriculture industry. However, the event has since grown to include several attractions that keep people coming back.

So what tops fair-goers' list of favorite fair festivities? WVLT News went along to find out what fair fun is all about.

Kimberly Thompson is a Knoxville native and has gone to the fair since she was young. "Once the sun goes down; the lights, all the fascinating rides, it brings back lots of memories," she said. But the rides and the fair food are what really keep her coming back.

Her daughter agreed with the rides. "I did not expect going upside down," she said after getting off one of the carnival attractions. "I like the prizes and the rides," she added.

Mikayla Porras goes to the fair for the rides as well. "Honestly, I like the rides because I've always been a rider," she said. "There's a lot of surprises at the fair."

Others said the entertainment is a fun part. Scotty McCreery took center stage Thursday night. But the fair had a whole list of performers. You can learn more about the Tennessee Valley Fair here. The fun wraps up on Sunday.
