Virginia officer, woman found dead in truck

LEE COUNTY, Va. (WVLT/WJHL) -- The town manager of Big Stone Gap in Virginia confirmed that a police officer and a young woman were found dead of gunshot wounds inside a truck on Sunday.

CBS affiliate WJHL reported that the officer, identified as 21-year-old Bailey Smith, was found with 26-year-old Emeri A. Connery, of Ohio. They were found dead in a 2015 GMC pickup truck at around 4 a.m.

The truck had been traveling north on Route 23 when it ran off the left side of the highway and into a median. When a state trooper arrived on scene, the victims were dead.

Both victims were transported to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy and examination.
