The bridge was originally built by the Nashville Bridge Company between 1942 to 1944. The bridge gives Chesnut Hill residents a route to the city of Dandridge.
The decision to replace the bridge was made to contract on October 16, 2015.
According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Simpson Construction Company was slated as the contractor of the new bridge that's projected to cost $29,106,151.81.
Officials said they expect the new bridge to be completed by April 15, 2019.
The new bridge will have 12 lanes, 10 foot shoulders, and a 5 foot sidewalk.
After the blasting of the center span, contractors will use cranes to remove the old bridge sections out of the lake and load onto trucks to haul off.
A section of the steel from the old bridge will be donated to the city of Dandridge to remember the old bridge.
