Will Yves Pons’ face mask lead to a breakout performance?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Time after time, NBA players have breakout performances while wearing masks.

Rip Hamilton called his face mask -- his "superman cape".

He broke his nose twice during the 2003-04 season, leading to his signature look. His Detroit Pistons won the NBA title that same season... Hamilton wore the mask for the rest of his career, by choice.

--Kyrie Irving wore a mask for just one game in 2012 and scored 41 points.

--In March of the same year, Kobe Bryant scored 38 points while wearing a mask.

--LeBron James has worn masks on multiple occasions, but most notably, he scored 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting, while wearing a black mask in 2014.

--In 2015, Russell Westbrook scored 49 points while wearing a mask, and helped the OKC Thunder to an overtime win.

Tennessee's Yves Pons, after missing Saturday's game due to a facial injury, is expected to return to the Vols' lineup on Wednesday -- wearing a mask.
