ATHENS, Tenn. (WVLT) -- One woman was shot in the leg while another was struck by a car after a domestic dispute turned violent in Athens Sunday.
At approximately 6:30 pm, the Athens Police Department was dispatched to Brewer street, in reference to a female that had been shot and another that had been struck with a car.
Units with the Athens Police Department and the McMinn County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and were able to locate both victims in the driveway of the home.
Both victims received immediate medical treatment at the scene and were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
At this time, authorities believe that the incident started over a custody issue. The mother of the children responded to the child’s grandparents’ home, where her husband and children were, to pick up the children.
Prior to her arrival and once at the home, she was told she was not going to be allowed to take the children with her.
The mother then proceeded to use her vehicle to ram the gate of the home, striking the grandmother with her vehicle.
She then exited her vehicle and walked towards her husband and his family, all of which were now outside. The husband then fired one round from a handgun, striking her in the leg.
This is a developing story.
