(WVLT) -- The world's longest lightning was recorded at 199.5 miles in Oklahoma in 2007, according to CBS News. The World Meteorological Organization recently announced the new record.
CBS News reports the World Meteorological Organization also announced the longest duration for a single flash of lightning; which was 7.74 seconds. This flash happened over Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France on August 30, 2012.
According to CBS, these records are the first about lightning to be included in the official WMO World Weather & Climate Extremes Archive.
