A 4-year-old doubling as a police officer in Newport received an award from the City of Newport Board of Mayor and Aldermen for his dedication to community service.

Little Sawyer Schimming works with Sgt. Justin Vinson to direct traffic at Newport Grammar School.

"The police officer gets kids back home safely," Schimming told

Although Sgt. Justin Vinson is technically in charge of the school traffic zone, he said that Sawyer is a big help.

"He will go out and stand there right on the corner, motion them on through," said Vinson in

"He will sit there and tell them, 'That way, that way,' he'll blow his little whistle. I mean, it's just the greatest thing ever."

Schimming dresses like a police officer from head to toe and blows his whistle to help direct the cars.

"I have to blow the whistle at the cars," Schimming said.

The City said the 4-year-old does such a great job they decided to recognize him for all his hard work. The City of Newport Board of Mayor and Aldermen awarded Schimming a Certificate of Achievement for his dedication to community service at the monthly meeting.
