#8 Tennessee Shuts Out Mississippi State, 4-0, in Series Opener

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- The No. 9/8 Lady Vols shut out Mississippi State, 4-0, on the heels of a two-hit complete game by freshman right-hander Ashley Rogers and a statement home run from Haley Bearden at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium on Friday night.

Rogers got the starting nod against the Bulldogs and threw four strikeouts in 7.0 innings, including one to the leadoff batter in the first. The outing marked her 14th win of the season, 11th complete game and sixth shutout.

At the plate, UT was led by Bearden (2-for-2, 1 RBI) and Kaitlin Parsons ( 2-for- 4, 2 RBI). Jenna Holcomb also scored two runs for the Lady Vols.

Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the third when Tennessee plated the first run of the game on Parsons' RBI single. With two outs, Holcomb hit a one-bagger back to the pitcher before stealing second. She then scored on Parsons' hit that fell just short of the center fielder in the next at-bat to make it a 1-0 game.

In the fifth inning, Parsons came up big again. The freshman hit her first RBI triple since donning the Orange and White and came home on Aubrey Leach's sacrifice fly one batter later, pushing UT's lead to 3-0.

Senior Haley Bearden then punctuated the Lady Vols' victory with a home run ripped over the right-center field bleachers in the sixth, giving Tennessee the 4-0 advantage.

The final inning of the matchup was capped off by a snag from Leach at second and two strikeouts from Rogers to end the game.

The Bulldogs only put two runners on in the outing during the second and fourth innings but never advanced a runner past second base.

BEARDEN GOES BOOM: With her homer in the sixth inning, Haley Bearden moved into the team lead with 10 long balls on the year. The solo shot was launched over the right-center field bleachers into the parking lot.
