KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- It was a whirlwind weekend for coach Rick Barnes. One in which he was offered a job and lucrative contract by UCLA.Then he met with UT A-D Phillip Fulmer, a meeting which resulted in an equally lucrative counter offer from Tennessee. In the end, Barnes decided Knoxville and East Tennessee is where he wants to be.
The Naismith Coach of the Year spoke with WVLT contributor Chris Low of ESPN on Tuesday. With regards to entertaining the offer from the Bruins Barnes said, "It had nothing to do with Tennessee. It was simply the lure of UCLA basketball. In my mind the UCLA basketball job was something I thought I had to look at."
Low says sources have told ESPN that Barnes' new deal will pay him in excess of 4-million this season and approach 6-million dollars by the end of the contract.
