Bearden grad Lane Thomas hits home run on first MLB swing

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Lane Thomas graduated from Bearden High School five years ago, and quickly went on to play in the Minor League Baseball system, after being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Years later, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Now, he's finally getting his shot at Major League Baseball, and taking full advantage of the opportunity.

Thomas hit a home run on his first big league swing Friday night.

Two days later, he made a nice sliding catch when the Cardinals were up by two runs late in the game.

His high school baseball coach, John Rice spoke with us on Monday about Thomas' early success in the big leagues -- something he's not surprised about.
