JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - A student from Jefferson County High School beat out thousands of kids across the country to win the Wendy's High School Heisman scholarship, an elevated scholarship for student athletes.
Lauren Eccles played soccer, swam, and ran track for Jefferson County High School.
She is the no. 1 student in her class, scoring a 35 on the ACT and 1420 SAT. She has a 4.0 GPA.
She devoted almost 15 hours per week to student government, Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, Lions Club Leos community service, and more.
In a surprise assembly in front of her fellow classmates, Jefferson County High School Athletics Director Randy Rogers and JCHS alum Anthony Taylor of Wendy's surprised Eccles with the news that she won.
Eccles was one of more than 40,000 students who applied for the scholarship worth $5,000. She also won a trip to New York City to partake in the Heisman festivities.
Eccles said she hopes to attend Georgia Tech and study chemical engineering.
