Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT)— The UT family is certainly hurting for former Vol basketball great Tony White. The Wizard as he was called, who is one of the most prolific scorers in Tennessee basketball history, is in the fight of his life battling leukemia. Former Vol teammates have been to visit him at the hospital as has Tennessee head basketball coach Rick Barnes, who offered up this plea,"He's back in the hospital and I just ask everybody that thoughts and prayers go his way, I've been over there a couple times and he's fighting."
WVLT contributor and ESPN.com senior writer Chris Low went to school at UT with Tony. He says this is fight Tony has not awill not back down from, “All he did was come to Tennessee and kick everybody's rear end and one of the best scorers to ever play in this league , he'll kick this lukemia's rear end too, that's the kind of person he is, he's strong his spirits are up and his wife Barbie's been an angel there beside him every step of the way."
A Go Fund Me page has raised thousands of dollars for Tony, who played at UT from 1983-1987. The White family asks for your continued thoughts and prayers. Tony was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia M5 in September 2018. The only risk factor he had was exposure to benzene and radiation at work.
