Kara Lawson: " I don't want it to be about my gender"

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- How about what Kara Lawson is doing! A true trailblazer when it comes to women in a male dominated sports league. The former UT All American is now an assistant coach for the NBA Boston Celtics.

Kara's always wanted to be a coach and now she's got her chance, but she doesn't want her gender to be a distraction, “Every time somebody talks about me I don't want it to be about my gender at least when it comes in the confines of a competitive environment. Obviously outside from a societal standpoint that's gonna happen because it's unusual still, hopefully it won't be unusual down the road."

We all remember The All-American as a Lady Vol. She says from the time she left UT as a 22-year old until she turned 36, the calls never came regarding coaching. Well, that just goes to show how far
the industry has come.
