Maurer making a difference for local athletes

Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Imagine training a professional athlete one day, and then training a middle schooler the next? That's reality for one woman here in East Tennessee.

The players on the Pittsburgh Pirates roster are at the top of their game, while the kids at Concord Christian School, who hope to someday be there, need to get through 7th and 8th grade first.

But what if the Pirates and Concord Christian Middle schoolers (here in knoxville) have something major in common, as in the person coaching them up! That person is Pirates Director of Sports Nutrition Allison Maurer who says, "with middle school it's a lot of let's walk and chew gum at the same time. they grow so fast and they don't realize it. one day they're super coordinated and the next day they can barely tie their shoes."

With regards to working with the big league Pirates Allison says,
"they're more fine tuning. they're looking for the little things that are going to put the cap on everything else they've done."
she was a sports dietitian with the vols' athletic programs for about a decade.. and still lives in Knoxville."

You can also add "interim athletic director" to Allison's list of titles and she has many, but her favorite one of all is "mom". About her kids Allison adds, " I want them to do what they want to do, but i want them to work hard for it."

Her son, one of her three kids, is on the team at Concord Christian team. Allison says about her son, "being able to spend time out here with him and know him from a different perspective."

So she goes back-and-forth between coaching her 12 year old son
and guys on the Pittsburgh Pirates and she'd have it no other way!
