PHOENIX (WVLT) The No. 7 Vols got off to a hot start against the No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs, and late theatrics from Admiral Schofield propelled Tennessee to a win over the Zags, 76-73.
Tennessee (7-1) opened the first five minutes of play on a 14-5 run against the Zags (9-1). They were shooting more than 67 percent from the field in that stretch.
But Gonzaga was able to narrow things to just a 34-33 Vol lead at the half and made it a back-and-forth game for most of the second half.
Senior Admiral Schofield turned in an inspired performance, scoring 30 points and going 12-of-22 from the field. He made six of his ten three-point attempts.
Grant Williams fouled out with 2:30 remaining in regulation.
The win marks Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes' first victory over a No. 1-ranked team.
The Vols remain on the road for their next game, an intrastate showdown Saturday against Memphis. Tip-off is set for noon.
