Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500 when he was just 20 years old back in 2011.
Now he's pursuing a new passion, roasting coffee.
Mahalo Coffee opened Saturday in Powell, they roast and brew their own coffee in house. Bayne says he sees some similarities between roasting coffee beans and racing, "The roasting process to me is kind of like driving a race car, I get to look at graphs and control the throttle on the gas. There's a lot of science to roasting coffee, it comes to us green and then we roast it and brew it into something you can enjoy."
The community support for the race car driver turned coffee connoisseur has been humbling and so has the pace of running a coffee shop says Bayne. "We've always known our fanbase in racing has been hugely supportive, which is another reason we wanted to name this business Mahalo because we are so thankful for this community. I thought coffee would be slower paced than racing but when you get a lunch rush in here it's all you can do to pump out drinks and it's an adrenaline rush."
Mahalo Coffee is located at 1317 E. Emory Road in Knoxville
