Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT)-- The basketball Vols open sec play Saturday at a sold out Thompson-Boling Arena. Sitting court side as they do for each UT game will be the dynamic duo of Bob Kesling and Bert Bertlekamp.
The Vol Network's Kesling and Bertlekamp are celebrating thheir 20th year behind the mic and court-side at UT games. Bob says, "It's been a lot of fun, we've seen a lot of good basketball and now we're seeing better basketball since when Bert was playing with Ernie and Bernie."
Bert adds, "I used to do it year to year and evaluate if I wanted to do it another year and now I don't even do that it's just so much fun."
Bob continues," We did game son TV first for the Vol Network so I asked Bert to do the games with me because he sat right there on the first row because I said I want somebody invested in this and I know Bert is a local guy he played here so when I got asked to do the radio well he was the obvious choice."
Now these two have had a great time together, but the fun really starts when the action heats up and Bertlekamp, who brings the passion of a former Vol great, to the airwaves. Bert says he wanted to call the games like a former player, "I get fired up now they told me when I took the job you can't be a homer I said, well I'm not your man because I'm gonna be a home because I'm a Vol, I played here and I love the program and I want them to do well and I'm sure it comes out on the radio."
Making things more fun for Bert and Bob is a terrific group if players they get to broadcast about and a coach who likes to have some fun with them as well. Here's how the two responded when asked about coach Barnes,Kesling said, "Rick's as intense as any of those guys, but as soon as he crosses the line he's a jokester he's a lot of fun.hat's kind of the magic of Rick Barnes, when it's time to work it's time to work, when it's time to have fun it's time to have fun."
About Barnes Bert adds, " I hope he continues topick on Bob, he kind of lays off me I catch a little bit of it, but coach Barnes is a great guy, it's all in fun and we respect him so much. And I respect Bob a tremendous amount because the job he does, he's a professional he has a lot more on his plate than I do."
You can next catch Bob and Bert on the radio during the Vol Network broadcast Saturday at 3:30 p.m. of the Vols and Georgia Bulldogs at Thompson-Boling Arena.
