Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT)-- When you walk into Sweetwater's very unique gymnasium, you'll notice banners hanging from the rafters, a symbol of the rich athletic history of the school says head coach Jeremy Henderson, "there's athletes down here I know the tradition here."
At the gym, you'll also notice a table, one which has nothing to do with basketball according to Henderson, "a teacher emails me and says students are missing assignments. then we've got a table over there and while everybody's practicing we'll set up a mini classroom for them and they can do homework."
Well that academics first mindset shines brightly through the team's leading scorer Dominique Oggs, "my mom and coaches growing up always let me know that schools comes first and without school you ain't gonna go anywhere anyway. so might as well try your hardest now in school and be rewarded for it later on in sports."
Now a Senior, Oggs mainatins a 3.9 GPA while thrilling fans on the basketball court, something he says he loves to do, "everybody was pumped up for the game and I tried to dunk it as hard as Icould honestly." To which his head coach responds, "the next thing you know he's flying toward the rim and some poor kids about to catch the wrong end of it."
Dom comes from a long line of Sweetwater athletic success. His uncle Anthony, who played football there in the early 1970's still holds the school's rushing and scoring records and Dominique couldn't be more proud, "he was a father figure at some point. we lived with him for about 2 years because he was disabled. he was always around."
And the Oggs tradition continues today with Dom averaging 22 points per game. Congratulations to Dominique Oggs, our Varsity All Access Player of the Week!
