EU funds firm developing virus vaccine amid US interest

BERLIN (AP) — The European Union is making a multimillion-dollar investment in a German company that is working on a coronavirus vaccine amid reports that the U.S. government expressed interest in acquiring the firm.

The funding, 80 million euros or about $89.4 million dollars, is part of a coordinated response by the EU to the coronavirus.

Citing unnamed government sources, a German newspaper had reported that President Donald Trump had offered CureVac a large amount of money to secure its work for the U.S.

The White House said it was not aware of the “underlying information” in the newspaper report.
