Beloved single father, cyclist killed in suspected drunk driving crash

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) - A 51-year-old father and cyclist was killed in a crash involving a suspected drunk driver.

Carlos Moreno was an avid cyclist. He died Sunday doing what he loved.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said a drunk driver swerved into Moreno’s lane and hit him while going the opposite direction on Sugar Pike Road in Canton.

There’s no doubt Frank Gerdts will miss Carlos Moreno’s friendship.

“Carlos was a very quiet, introverted person, but he was very strong in terms of his personality,” Gerdts said.

Gerdts started a GoFundMe to help the four children Moreno leaves behind. He describes Moreno as a dedicated single father, and he is encouraging all to rethink driving while intoxicated.

“There’s Uber. We’ve heard it over and over and over — it’s really not worth it,” Gerdts said. “I was going to hang up my bike and not ride anymore, but I know he wouldn’t want that. He would still want us to continue riding.”

Deputies arrested 42-year-old Lane Keyes in connection to the incident. He faces several charges:

• Vehicular homicide
• Driving under the influence
• Tampering with evidence
• Weaving over the roadway
• Driving too fast for conditions
• Open container of alcohol in a vehicle
• Reckless driving
