MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Friends and family gathered Thursday night in Raleigh to remember Grammy-nominated music producer Tay Keith, who was found dead in his Nashville apartment on June 18 at age 29.

Brytavious LaKeith Chambers, known professionally as Tay Keith, grew up in Raleigh and created a new sound with childhood friend BlocBoy JB while still a teenager.

Thursday’s vigil was held near his childhood home.

“We thank each and every one of you for being out here,” his uncle Deon Conway said while addressing the crowd.

A prolific career

Tay Keith produced 11 Billboard Hot 100 top ten hits, including his 2018 breakout hits “Look Alive” by BlocBoy JB and “Nonstop” by Drake.

That same year, the White Station High School alum earned two degrees from Middle Tennessee State University.

He worked with big names like Beyoncé, Eminem, Future, and Travis Scott throughout his career.

He received his first Grammy nomination in 2019 for his work on Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.”

Family remembers his character

“He was a phenomenal human being. He was kind. He was intelligent. I would say even brilliant,” said his uncle. “He was the first one in our family to actually go to college and graduate with a degree.”

His aunt spoke about the emotional weight of his death while expressing gratitude for the community’s support.

“We are all like, ‘Are we really doing this for the death of our nephew?’ And it’s just, like, it’s heartbreaking, but at the same time, we appreciate everybody for coming out and celebrating with us,” she said.

Vigil organizer Jasper Netter said Tay Keith’s influence extended beyond his own work.

“He helped a lot of young entrepreneurs and artists reach their destiny. He took chances on them other people wouldn’t take,” Netter said.

Legacy lives on

Despite his success, family members said Tay Keith remained humble and helpful to those around him. Thursday’s vigil ended with attendees releasing balloons into the air while shouting “Long live Tay Keith.”
