Knoxville couple shares their love for Lego
Katie and Marty Mitchell have an impressive collection of Lego builds they’ve created by hand
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -Katie and Marty Mitchell have a serious love for Legos. Not only are they members of the Tennessee Valley Lego Club’s Knoxville Chapter, the couple has been busy during the pandemic building a variety of Lego structures.
Typically, the couple would create various characters and towns for shows and competitions, but due to the pandemic they say a lot of them were cancelled.
The Mitchells have a Lego room in their house where they’ve spent a lot of time building. They say creating their own builds and characters was therapeutic during the pandemic.
“It was easy to find a new project to work on that we could just shut-out everything around us, and we could come up here and build and just enjoy ourselves and pretend the outside world didn’t exist,” shared Marty.
The couple has put together a variety of builds including: a cat in a box, a 2-foot tall snowman, small towns, a Christmas tree for Fantasy of the Trees and dozens of favorite characters.
“We do these events where we get dozens, if not hundreds, of kids at any given event who are coming through and just jaws on the floor, and it feels amazing when you get that incredible complement,” says Marty.
For now the Mitchells are preparing for Lego shows, in hopes they will resume this summer.
“My current project is under the sea, that’s one of my current projects. I’m working on expanding it. The size that it is right now, that portion is finished, but it’s gonna be three times as large in the end,” says Katie.
The Mitchells say Lego bricks are more than just a toy.
“For kids it gives them an opportunity to really express themselves to see physically made whatever they have in their head and it’s just an incredible outlet.” says Marty.
Katie and Marty started building together with Lego bricks at the beginning of their relationship. They said as a date they built a replica of Fallingwater by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
