Tennessee renters call for end to price hikes, more protection
A delegation of renters will ask legislators to sign an Open Letter calling for federal renter protections.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - As rent prices continue to soar in Tennessee, renters from across the state are pushing for more affordable housing and tenants’ rights.
Tennessee for Safe Homes is organizing the event to encourage lawmakers to introduce bills that would remove the barriers that prevent more affordable housing.
They also would like to see more bills that would help protect renters, and fund what renters need. This comes as homelessness is on the rise across Tennessee.
On Tuesday, renters will ask Tennessee lawmakers to sign an open letter calling for federal renter protections including:
- Limiting rent hikes
- Repair requirements
- A landlord registry
- Tenant protections from retaliation in federally subsidized housing complexes
Renters are also encouraging lawmakers to support bills that would help with building more affordable housing and tenants’ rights.
The group will meet at the State Capitol to meet with their elected representatives at noon on Tuesday.
