NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill that would make “abortion trafficking” a criminal offense in Tennessee on Tuesday.

The bill, HB 1895, creates a criminal offense of abortion trafficking of a minor and provides a civil action against a person taking a pregnant minor out of state to get an abortion. The law will go into effect on July 1.

“Abortion - As introduced, creates the criminal offense of abortion trafficking of a minor; provides for a civil action against a person committing the offense of abortion trafficking of a minor for the wrongful death of an unborn child that was aborted. - Amends TCA Title 8, Chapter 6; Title 29; Title 37 and Title 39,” the bill reads.

It passed through the General Assembly in April with little opposition. The bill was introduced by Senator Paul Rose and Representative Jason Zachary.
