Finnegan was convicted of several charges, including first-degree murder, rape and abuse of a corpse, in August. The charges stemmed from a 2020 investigation, during which police said Finnegan and his girlfriend, Rebecca Dishman, held 36-year-old Jennifer Paxton inside their home, torturing and raping her for days before finally killing her.

Finnegan’s death penalty sentence marked the first since Gov. Bill Lee placed a hold on lethal injections statewide. That pause came with an independent instigation that found the drugs being used to execute inmates had not been properly tested.
