CAMPBELL COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol is assisting an officer-involved shooting that shut down I-75 South in Campbell County Sunday afternoon.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, “police activity” shut down the interstate near mile marker 160 just before 2:30 p.m.

THP later added there was a crash involving a motorcycle and they helped close down the interstate so investigators could conduct a crash investigation.

One lane of I-75 reopened just before 4 p.m., and the other southbound lane reopened at 5:50 p.m.

Later, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed the crash was related to an officer-involved shooting.

An officer with the Williamsburg Police Department in Kentucky tried to stop a motorcycle that was speeding along I-75 South. The driver refused to stop and kept going into Tennessee, according to the TBI.

“The officer reportedly deactivated emergency equipment but continued to follow the motorcycle until the driver made an abrupt stop near mile marker 158,” TBI officials said. “At that point, the officer pulled in behind the driver. According to reports from the scene, the motorcycle driver backed into the officer’s vehicle and then began driving north in the southbound lane of traffic.”

The officer fired shots before the driver continued to drive away, sparking a Be on the Lookout (BOLO) for Tennessee agencies.

The motorcycle driver then crashed in Anderson County and was taken to a local hospital.

THP is investigating the crash while the TBI is investigating the shooting.
