One Knox defeats MLS club DC United for historic win
It’s only the third time a USL League One team has defeated a Major League Soccer club.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - One Knox earned a historic win on Wednesday, defeating Major League Soccer’s DC United in penalty kicks to advance to the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.
Trailing 3-2 in extra time, Denis Krioutchenkov netted an equalizer to send the game to penalty kicks. It was Krioutchenkov’s second goal of the night.
In penalties, both sides made their first six attempts before One Knox goalie Jonathan Burke put Knoxville in the driver’s seat with a diving save.
From there, Kyle Linhares found the back of the net to give the defending USL League One champions the historic win.
It’s only the third time a USL League One team has defeated a Major League Soccer club.
One Knox advances to the Round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup where it will face another MLS club in the Columbus Crew.
