KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Visit Knoxville has announced free local Sunsphere days for Knox County residents is returning from May through October.
Those with a physical copy of their Knox County driver’s license can visit the observation deck on the fourth floor for free on the following dates:
- May 1
- June 5
- August 7
- September 4
- October 2
Officials with Visit Knoxville said the observation deck allows up to 40 people every 30 minutes, meaning space is limited and admission is on a first come, first serve basis. Because of this, it will be open an hour later, until 6 p.m., for an additional hour of enjoyment.
“We are excited to continue to offer these free local Sunsphere days,” said Kim Bumpas, president of Visit Knoxville. “The Sunsphere offers a variety of programming year-round, and the free local days are another opportunity to enjoy Knoxville’s iconic structure with our community.”
Additionally, admission to the Sunsphere will be discounted for all visitors from May 3 through May 9 for National Travel and Tourism Week. Tickets can be purchased here starting May 1 with the code NTTW26 for $8 adult tickets and $3 for children 12 and under.
The Sunsphere was built for the 1982 World’s Fair and offers a stunning 360-degree view of downtown Knoxville, the Great Smoky Mountains, World’s Fair Park, the Tennessee River, and the University of Tennessee.
It also has a timeline, gallery, memorabilia, a mural and technology related to the World’s Fair.
