‘Completely preventable’ | Bear cub dies in Sevier County after being crushed by unsecured trash container; according to ABR
A bear cub died on Monday after being crushed just outside of Gatlinburg.
SEVIER CO., Tenn. (WVLT) - A bear cub was crushed by an unsecure trash receptacle just outside of Gatlinburg city limits on Monday, according to a post by Appalachian Bear Rescue.
The post notes that a mother bear allegedly pulled an unsecured trash receptable onto her cub, which is what resulted in its death.
“This mother bear had likely been in the area because she had been able to access human food in these trash bins... It is important that we are not only using bear resistant containers in our communities but that we are using them properly. This cub’s mortality was completely preventable and would not have happened if the bear resistant trash receptable had been properly secured to the ground,” the post said.
ABR also said that bears should never get food from the trash because it almost always leads to their death.
