MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A Los Angeles native is behind bars at the Shelby County Jail on a $1 million bond after law enforcement officers allegedly seized 2.2 pounds of fentanyl from his luggage at the Greyhound bus station in Memphis.

West Tennessee Drug Task Force (WTDTF) agents made the discovery Thursday morning while conducting random searches of passengers on an incoming bus from Oklahoma City.

Agents boarded the bus as it arrived at 3033 Airways Boulevard, announcing to all passengers that they would be interviewing them and checking some bags for illegal weapons or narcotics as they deboarded.

One passenger, later identified as 39-year-old Susano Tee Jr., told agents he was traveling to Atlanta and allowed them to search the black backpack he was carrying. Agents reportedly found a brick of suspected drugs concealed within it.

According to the arrest affidavit, Tee hung his head before agents could acknowledge the suspicious package, saying, “I’m sorry.”

Agents then patted down and detained Tee, who allegedly continued to apologize over the discovery, saying, “They just paid me to take it from L.A. to Atlanta,” and “I’m just trying to get my life on track.”

At the police station, Tee allegedly told investigators that the backpack was given to him at a bus station in L.A. the night before.

He claimed he thought the backpack had cocaine inside, and that he was expecting to meet someone at the Greyhound station in Atlanta to retrieve it.

Testing confirmed the suspicious brick contained 2.2 pounds of fentanyl.

WTDTF reports that the drugs have a wholesale value of about $23,000 and a street value of about $100,000.

Tee was booked at the Shelby County Jail on Thursday. He is charged with one count of fentanyl possession with the intent to distribute.

His next scheduled court appearance is set for October 19.
