City council passes resolution calling for ICE, National Guard to leave city
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The Memphis City Council approved a resolution calling for the removal of the National Guard and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from the city.
The council approved the resolution during a meeting Tuesday night. The resolution cites an ICE raid that happened in September at El Corralón, a nightclub on Macon Road.
The raid “rais[ed] concerns about due process and the impact of federal immigration enforcement on local communities, including the disruption and separation of Memphis families,” the resolution reads.
It also notes that six people have died as a result of Memphis Safe Task Force operations.
While the council does not have the authority to remove either entity from the city, the vote was passed for the council to be on record with its opposition.
