Dolly Parton’s legacy inspiring the next generation of Girl Scouts
Hundreds gather at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort for first Coat of Many Colors patch program
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — Nearly 300 Girl Scouts from across the country gathered at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort on Saturday for the first Coat of Many Colors patch program, honoring Dolly Parton’s legacy with the Girl Scouts.
Dolly’s history with Girl Scouts
Nearly 20 years ago, Parton shared that she had always dreamed of being a Girl Scout as a child. According to Amanda Johnson, director of Girl Programs, Parton said her family’s restrictions kept her from joining as a child. She was made a lifetime member of Girl Scouts in 2007.
“She really paved the way for girls to become really strong in themselves as well as to become an amazing entrepreneur,” Johnson said.
A Girl Scout troop created the Coat of Many Colors patch program following Parton’s lifetime membership.

Event grew after Parton’s passing
The event was originally planned for about 50 girls. Following Parton’s passing, registration grew to include girls from surrounding Girl Scout councils and from across the country.
“We started out what we thought would be a really small event and it turned into a really big opportunity for our girls to come together and celebrate the legacy of Dolly,” Johnson said.
Girls learn confidence and kindness
Participants worked to complete the steps of the Coat of Many Colors patch, based on Parton’s song of the same name. Girl Scout Evelyn Price said she learned several lessons from Parton.
“To be an inspiration to all people. To have a kind heart. To be brave,” Price said.
Another Girl Scout said being brave, strong and a leader were part of being a Girl Scout.
Johnson said organizers hope the event leaves a lasting impression on participants.
“We want the girls to feel a stronger sense of self, and we want them to learn what makes them unique as well as what makes everyone they meet unique,” Johnson said.
“They will continue to carry on the legacy of Dolly and kind of take a little bit of her everywhere they go,” Johnson said.
One Girl Scout said she will remember learning about Parton and her impact.
“I think I’m going to remember how we are learning about Dolly Parton and how she helped with a lot of people. And how she made changes. And how Dolly is amazing,” she said.
