Flash flooding damages homes, roads in Harlan County communities

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Flash flooding overnight caused extensive damage to homes, vehicles, roads and infrastructure in the Harlan County communities of Coxton, Brookside and Ages, according to Harlan County Emergency Management.

Water rescues took place overnight, and some residents had to leave their homes. Fire departments, law enforcement and rescue squad teams responded to help people reach safety.

Harlan County Emergency Management said it is not aware of any loss of life connected to the flooding.

Officials said repairs and cleanup will take time, and residents in the area will need help cleaning up.

Kentucky 38 is open near Brookside but remains mud covered and slick. Ages Creek Road, Gabe’s Branch Road and Wildcat Hollow sustained significant damage. Officials advised extreme caution when using these routes.
