One Knox SC makes history with first match at new downtown stadium

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - One Knox SC has made history in several different ways playing its first match at Covenant Health Park on Saturday.

It marked the first-ever soccer match at the new facility, which featured a new league attendance record and the first time the stadium transitioned from baseball to soccer.

One Knox SC managing partner Drew McKenna said it went really well.

“Probably better than we thought,” McKenna said. “You weren’t seeing any big chunks or anything like that coming up, so our players were really happy with it. The best thing for the players isn’t the turf; it’s the fans. Getting to play in a packed house is what they really care about.”

Thousands were at the match, including Jonathan Chapman and his family. He described it as a memorable experience.

“Finally getting to sit in the new home with the fan section and everything. All of the drums made it fantastic,” Chapman said. “The way they set up the park is really nice. It has good viewing angles from pretty much any seat.”

One Knox SC also welcomed in its independent group of supporters, The Scruffs. Tim Vacek is the board chairperson for the group.

“The magic and the energy inside that stadium for 90 minutes was pretty incredible,” Vacek said. “Unbelievable. One of the best sporting memories of my life.”

The one test during the game for McKenna came during penalty kicks. It’s because they happened where the sod was put down over the infield dirt.

“When we got there, it was a hold your breath moment, but it stood up great. I walked out there afterwards. It still looked playable so really really positive,” McKenna said.

One Knox SC will play its next home match at Covenant Health Park on May 9th. A day later, the stadium will host the first ever women’s soccer match.
