Maryville officer undergoes surgery after being critically injured in crash during security motorcade for JD Vance

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that happened during a security motorcade for Vice President JD Vance.

The crash happened Friday evening on East Lamar Alexander Parkway at Merritt Road and involved a THP trooper and an officer with the Maryville Police Department, according to a spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

In an update Saturday afternoon, Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said the officer, Justin Brown, was critically injured when his police motorcycle was involved in a crash with a THP cruiser while providing a “dignitary protection detail escort for Vice President JD Vance.”

Crisp said a group of people on the scene immediately rendered aid and played a critical role in saving Brown’s life.

“To those individuals whose quick response saved FTO Brown’s life last night, we could never thank you enough. You are true heroes,” said Crisp.

Brown was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he is still in critical condition with significant injuries, Crisp said, adding that he was taken into surgery Saturday morning.

Crisp also said he was grateful for the prayers and support for Brown and the trooper.

“We are grateful for each and every one and appreciate the prayers and support from all over the state,” said Crisp. “Our hearts and prayers also go out to the trooper involved in the crash.”

The trooper involved in the crash was evaluated by paramedics on the scene.
